Laura Harrington has been playing piano since age 5 and oboe since age 12.  She earned her Bachelor of Music degree with emphasis in oboe performance from the University of California Santa Barbara under the guidance of Stuart Horn.  During her studies at UCSB she gave three solo recitals, participated in master classes, and performed with the University Orchestra, Wind Ensemble, Contemporary Music Ensemble, and chamber groups.  Laura especially enjoyed studying abroad for one year the the University of Manchester in England and participating in the music department there.

After graduating from UCSB, Laura spent several years in China and Taiwan teaching the Harmony Road Music Course (an early childhood music education program emphasizing total musicanship in a group setting).  Since her return to the states in 2008, she has been teaching the Harmony Road Music Course, piano, and oboe lessons to students of all ages and skill levels.  She emjoys performig with many local groups including the Auburn Symphony, Folsom Symphony, Veridian Symphony, River City Chorale, Sierra Master Chorale, Rocklin Community Theater, Green Valley Theater Company, Davis Musical Theater Company, and Centerpoint Community Church.

I believe there are many paths to learning an instrument depending on each individual student's personality, learning style, goals, and personal taste in music.  My goal is to help students stay interested and keep moving forward using appealing material and performance/audition opportunities.  I will also help students to build a solid foundation of technical skills and essential knowledge of music theory to help with their studies.  As a member of the American College of Musicians and the Music Teachers Association of California, I can offer students the opportunity to participate in the National Piano Guild Auditions as well as the Certificate of Merit program for piano and winds.

One of the most important things a parent can do to help the student be successful with learning an instrument is to communicate with the instructor when things aren't going well at home.  There are many options and approaches out there, so if a certain song or book is casuing the student to lost momentum, please let me know!
